I would like to know if anyone uses VPS Server for hosting their viart ecommerce site.
Or do you use Dedicated server ?
If yes, which providers/companies have you purchased your hosting ?

We've used both VPS's and Dedicated Servers - and the main point to consider when deciding over either is - the size of the product database, and the number of users who would be surfing or shopping (as the case may be). Something to bear in mind is also whether the forum is going to be operational - as this can consume resources.
We've also experimented using it on a shared platform - and so far have not had any negative experience - but on a shared platform it would entirely be dependent on the base server .. and ofcourse how many other sites have been hosted on the server ...
Hope that helps you Ibn Saeed ....

I am looking into the following for VPS Server.
I expect 10,000 visits per day for my new marketing plan.
Now, i would like to know is, how much RAM would be best for ecommerce with approximately 10,000 visits per DAY.

Ibn,
I'm currently looking at a US based Rackspace Cloud server as having my server an ocean away is not cutting it. There level of redundancy and 24x7 support is much better than the current platform I'm on.

Hi Ibn Saeed,
I've been using liquidweb VPS for over a year and I LOVE it. Anytime I call tech support they answer either immediately or in 2-3 minutes. They help me with just about anything. $60 per month is a great deal (vs. the $30-$45 I can get elsewhere with virtually no support).
Previously I had tried 3 cheaper VPS services - they each had a policy that if you get a VPS you must be smart enough to run it, and quite simply declined to support anything. A couple times when a particular tech tried to help, they knew even less than me about VPS.
My original reasons for going to VPS were:
1. inevitable molasses phenomena sometimes on the shared servers with hundreds of clients.
2. needed to host a clean reliable autoresponder/newsletter program for my mailing list of 2000. I threw some money the wrong directions on that too! In the end phplist is okay but clunky. I liked ListMessenger for basic, but now use full-featured Interspire which is working great for me.
Good wishes!

Hello vic140
Thanks for the reply
I am also gearing towards Liquidweb , that is why i have listed it on the top of my list.
Oh, regarding the mailing list, I also send newsletters to my customers, before i was using Oempro, but it was very buggy.
So i tried looking into Interspire and 12All Email marketing, but then i settled with hosted solution as the hassle of setting up everything would be there. Also, my domain would not be used for sending emails, so if the customers decide to mark my emails as SPAM, my domain wont suffer.
Anyhow, i went with mailchimp.com hosted solution. its a bit pricey when compared to campaignmonitor etc. But it is feature filled and very fast. I really like the reports it gives and the tracking capabilities.
If you dont mind me asking, how many visitors do you get per day and how many can your VPS handle.
Also, can you send me the link to the VPS plan to bought from LW.

ibn, it's $100 per month but every time i hit the site a new 'special' came up, one was 2nd month free
My visitors/month is currently about 10.000, but I think that I am way-under-using the VPS. I host several other sites for friends, no significant traffic. You could call tech support or even sales to get an idea, they are all quite knowledgeable. If your needs grow I think they would be more helpful than most to move you to a new server.
Sounds like you found a great solution for the email newsletters. For me another consideration is I meet as many as half of my subscribers in person at fairs, and I don't want to bug them with an opt-in after they signed up in their own handwriting! None of the providers seem to allow uploading new subscribers without opt-in.

@vic140, Mailchimp allows you to add subscribers without opt-in manually
Here is what they say at the list creation page:
------------------------------
Note: This person will not receive a confirmation email from MailChimp.
Since you're adding this recipient manually, he won't have an opt-in IP address or date in your records, so be extra sure you have permission first.

ccberries, have you experienced any downtime with your cloud site ?

just researched a bit at hosting forums and found that mosso has had a bit of reliability problems and slow performance of the control panel.
maybe they need some more time to be stable.
Anyhow, so i think im back to Liquidweb or the others on the list
