When I try to upload a downloadable file, it says there are no writing permission in the directory '../'.
Should I change the writing permission for the whole root?

Hi,

By default all uploads from admin panel are made to root folder of your store.
To change this please got to Administration > Products > Downloadable Products and change setting 'Administrators' directory for uploading files' to an existing folder.
Please note, if you are using relative path from the root of the store if must start with ../
E.g. if you want to upload files into the folder 'downloads' in the root of installed ViArt Shop the correct setting will be '../downloads/' or it's better to use absolute path like '/home/user/downloads/' outside of web root folder.

It would be much easier if the instructions in the manual in section 7.2. Download settings actually covered the fields that we find on the page.

For instance what does
"Files for uploading by administrators
(e.g.: *.mp3, *.zip, *.jpeg)
Note: If mask is not specified, standard images and
documents are to be uploaded (i.e. *.gif, *.png, *.doc, *.pdf)"

and

" Users' directory for uploading files"

and

" Files for uploading by users
(e.g.: *.mp3, *.zip, *.jpeg)"

refer to?

Thanks,
Robert

Hello,

Please, check the path you have indicated in Admin > Products > Downloadable products> 'Administrators' directory for uploading files'. It should be something like: ../downloads/ . Please, check if the folder is the one you want to use for uploads.

In case the path is correct, please send your request to support@viart.com providing us with your Admin and FTP details, so that we check the problem.

With regards,

Hello,

IMPORTANT:
Please, note that it is always better to put an absolute path like '/home/user/downloads/' instead of relative one like ../downloads/ as it will help you to avoid unexpected problems.

Here are some additional explanations:

"Files for uploading by administrators (e.g.: *.mp3, *.zip, *.jpeg)
Note: If mask is not specified, standard images and documents are to be uploaded (i.e. *.gif, *.png, *.doc, >*.pdf)"

In this field you can indicate the files that can be uploaded by an administrator. When pointed out, there will be a restriction for the files not indicated in the list.
When the filed is left empty, no restrictions will be applied.

Users' directory for uploading files

You may want to permit your users to upload different files on your site. This is the field to indicate the path to the users' uploads folder.

Files for uploading by users (e.g.: *.mp3, *.zip, *.jpeg)"

This is the filed where you can set restrictions for the files that can be uploaded by users. The users will be permitted to upload only those files that are listed in this field.

If the downloadables are uploaded via FTP, they don't appear in the selectable list for adding to a product, they only seem to be there if they are uploaded through Viart. Lots of my downloadables are way over 2Mb so can't be uploaded through Viart, have to go by FTP. What do I need to change so they are recognised as selectable to add to products?

Also, each merchant really only needs to be able to see their own uploads (and not everyones) so can I use subfolders so they can upload to an easily identifiable place to make it easier for them to locate their own downloadables when adding a product?

How are uploaded files protected against people passing the link to others?

Is the download link randomized? Is the folder name changed randomly?
