Hi Guys
 
I have tried to save myself some time(quite alot as I am slow)by using the system upgrade option in the admin. However, when I try it I am told that I have the latest version (3.2) am I doing something wrong?
 
BTW I have started testing a fresh install of 3.3.1 and the Google module looks perfect...:rofl:

Will be available any upgrade version for the 3.3 to easyly go to the new shop?
 
Or the System Ugrade works good and gets the old shop data to the new database?

I had some strange dream last night that the upgrade button in admin did a magical thing.
 
I thought it somehow would detect the pages that had been modified by the user, not overwrite them and simply upgrade all the other files and add any new ones.
 
As I came to full wakefulness my dream bubble burst and with a shock I realised I really am going to have to put some work in.

Anyway,
 
My dream was not in vain, I bit the bullet and upgraded using cute ftp in binary mode for the files and the admin for the database. Early days yet, but my store still looks the same as it did, and admin works.

The upgrade was an easy, simple procedure. FTP the new files, overwrite all, admin System upgrade - click a button and works.

I follow these simple steps and I don't have to fully depend on a upgrade script to be written properly. Actually it is always good to assume it won't.
 
Create a backup of your current site and download it to your local machine. Run the upgrade. Download all of the files again to a second folder after upgrade. Keep a list of the files that have been modified during your customizations. Use Winmerge http://winmerge.org/ to look at the files side by side. Copy over your customized segments to the new upgraded page leaving the rest of the new code in place. Upload the merged page. Once done merging all of the pages you are again back in business. Once complete I suggest removing all of the files on your local and downloading a nice new backup of all, zip it and archive it.
 
It sounds harder than it is. But this will help you to stay up to date and keep your little customizations.

I usually use BeyondCompare,I find it very useful. It seems I was doing it the wrong way round, and trying to update the old files one by one with the new code.
 
However, with hundreds of files this is a very time consuming way of doing it.
