Is the "free" version the same as the "30 day" trial version or has the "free" version no time limitation at all?

They should be the same.
There doesn't seem to be a time limitation on the free version, only a limitation on the number of categories/products/articles etc. Its for hosting on your own server.
The "30 day" trial version is hosted on ViArt servers and they time limit it as its presumably for demonstration only.
