My major issue is that you cannot get the right logic on the State/Province fields. If you make them both 'not required' then many customers will leave them out (assuming you are omnipotent and know where they live?) and then you have to contact them to get the correct info, very troubling. If you require both, that's no good, for obvious reasons, if you require only one of them, then the other will be ignored as mentioned above, by some customers.
 
The best thing to do here is use Javascript so that when the Country (which should come first in the list of fields) is non-US, then a "Province/State" field will appear and when it is US, then a 'State' field appears with the usual list in it.
 
I've asked repeatedly for some kind of resolution on this, but nothing has been done so far.

I am just setting up my new store and hadn't thought of this issue. I orders from around the world. I may be willing to chip in if this is still under consideration.
 
My old store has "state" field that only lists United States and then has an "outside US" option that requires the user to fill in a blank field. However, it's awkward so my non-US customers around the world often require assistance with this.

On second thought, I may just eliminate the state field all together. I operate an ebook store so having the city, zip/postal code, and country is enough. I'm not going to be printing shipping labels so it won't be a big deal to not have that info spelled out.

Did anyone get a fix for this BUG. I have spent my first day evaluating ViArt. It didnt take long to realize that the state selection drop down box is poorly implemented. The state selection box NEEDS to be dynamicly linked to Country selection.
Honestly..I need something that wont put customers off....No Ozzie customer is going to want to search thru all the USA states to find their correct state.
 
Did you end up paying for the fix? Id be interested.
 
 

All that is needed is this:
 
1. Viart, add a simple test in the code: If either the State or the Province field is filled, then accept the registration or check-out registration the customer is submitting. NOTE: Leave both State and Province fields 'show' but not 'required'. Leaving them both required will NOT work, nor will choosing just one, so BOTH MUST BE SHOW only.
 
(note, I had non-USA customers unable to register because their country does NOT use Provinces, and had to put some silly placeholder '-' in there just to enable them to register, that is too clumsy!)
 
2. When a customer registers, they will pick country, and either State or Province. States, cool, use the drop down list. For Province, use a free text field since the USA is only a tiny fraction of 50 states compared to thousands of Provinces worldwide. Customers can simply type in the Province.
 
I've been wrestling with this from Day 1, and think this is the best approach. Those of us shipping to 35 or so countries will REALLY appreciate this kind of SIMPLE change...

We were thinking more of another solution:
1) associate States with specific countries;
2) if customer selects a country that doesn't have states, the "States" field becomes unrequired.
 
This will definitely be implemented, thanks for reminding us of this, but we're just not sure when.

This issue is certainly a pain for my store, as I deal with international customers alot.
 
I tried to go down the Custom field route, but that too is limited, as it does allow to Sort the order of the field, it always appears at the end of all the other fields
 
 
I am astonished that such a basic feature is not in Viart, whereas this issue is not even raised at many other Shopping carts.
 
 
@Vera, you mentioned that it will be definitely implemented in September 2010, and now its Jan 2011. Even with the new V4.0 release, its still not imeplemented. When will it get implemented ?

Sorry I never added my name to go in on this feature, I tend to stop visiting the forum when I am not actively making changes to my site. I would be happy to go in if it is still on the table. Vera's solution above sounds good too.
 
Meantime I must say I find ViArt great for international orders. I mentioned above how I set up my state/province fields. I admit I am based in the US. If I were somewhere else I think I would just deactivate the state field and rename province as "state or province".

Hello vic140 - no it stalled through apparent lack of interest.
And I am not able to fund now as I am waiting for the One Page Checkout first
 
I prefer Vera's solution and will wait. I am in the UK but sell in all countries across the EU so that would be an excellent method.

I went ahead with vic140's temporary workaround.
 
I renamed the province field to State
 
Settings > System > System Static Messages -> Search for " province"
 
Rename the messages for the following Constants:
 
DELIVERY_PROVINCE_MSG = Delivery State
PROVINCE_FIELD = State
 
 
I dont know if its enough or if any other changes are required.

It seems that the State field is widely used in Viart compared to the Provide field.

Is anything been done about the state and associated country fields.
 
I have a serious issue here, as shipping is local (non us) but customer from the US are allowed to make purchases.
 
I can't delete the US states because its is then remove from the registration fields as well.
 
I Need to enter the local states/districts for shipping purposes.
 
I don't see how i can go live yet with this. My State fields are all a mess.

In settings you have something called 'Shipping Rules'. You can specify Countries/States for the rule you create, and then apply to your products. Why wouldn't this method work for you? It won't let them make the purchase at all in this method...
