I have a situation were when someone places an order against the system and are redirected to the payment gateway, one of our predefined serial number is assigned to the order.
 
If they exit the payment system (sagepay in this case) the 'new order' status is not changed and the license is still assigned to the order - meaning that it cannot be legitimately bought by someone else without manually deleting the serial number from the order.
 
This obviously could be missed and licenses being wasted.
 
Has anyone else come across this before, and has anyone got a solution?

Currently serial number is released only when you delete the whole order. To associate this process with order statuses will require some additional programming.
