The only solution I could come up with it to add to the product name : 3 for 2. Add the details in the description and you always know to include an extra one in the shipping when two are ordered.
Only problem of course is that it upsets stock control if you use it on site.
Hope this help - if someone has a better idea I will be glad to hear.

Good thought, ewoud.
You could show 3 at the price if two - but it does not have the impact of buy 2 get one free, sadly?

I don't know whether you can influence the dropdown list for qty's to force a certain amount to be bought, so you would not be able to enter 2 as the ordering quantity. in the highlights of the product description you would have the opportunity to describe the deal. it's a little extra step but on the plus side it would not mess up your stock control and other reporting issues...

Hope this helps:
I have already run a 3 for 2 offer but I am using the 3.5.13 beta.
I di it using the advance coupn functions. I am sure this eas available in previous version also but not 100% certain.
You basically set the a discount off 33.33% on multiples of every 3 purchased.
e.g normal price £1 they buy 3 and are charge £2
(£3 - 33.33 %)
Thats 3 for 2 and also manages the stock correctly !!!
+ if somebody buys 4 it charges full price for the 4th one
