It would be great to see Viart release a Opensource version. The community would have more developers, designers etc... That's why Drupal and Joomla are so huge today.

magento.com just released 1.1 of their open source cart. I just started to look at it, but not sure if its any better than viart.

It already is 90% open source. You won't get any more than that as has been made clear many times n this forum.
I do not want third party development - it muddles the set up and causes confusion in upgrades - and I can't see why you would want it anyway with such a good product that is constantly evolving.
If there is something you want you can commission it from Viart; or are you just wanting a freebie?

Yeah... same here. I don't want a freebie product, as you get what you pay for. And with constant security issues evolving, I'm glad viart fixes whatever goes wrong.

Magento is great if you're only using one of their default templates, but you will die a slow painful death trying to customize the thing - the templating system is logically interesting but incredibly complex in practice.

whatever,,
why have you not said what your code came from? you said it's over 97% open source, but you don't want 3 party help, and I have not seen stated what base Viart used? Are you worried someone will get the same base you used and make it multi-vender? i'm sure that would happen!

Isn't Viart already multi-vendor ?
Magento is great if you're only using one of their default templates, but you will die a slow painful death trying to customize the thing
I nearly died a slow painful death waiting for the thing to move.
Performance is a serious issue with that one

Open Source is a binary thing, it's open or it's not. Viart is NOT an open source application. Open Source software offers 2 basic benefits to the licensee:
1) The full to customize and/or extend an application to meet the licencor's needs. This is particularly important when a licensor has IP they want to use and protect themselves.
2) Protection from being critically dependent or entangled with the licensor. This is particularly important should the licensor's business fail, be sold, or change direction.
I find it acceptable for a vendor to sell a closed system. Or to offer an Open System and closed extensions. It's their intellectual property, their choice.
I don't find it acceptable to market a product as Open Source unless it is in fact Open Source.

Perhaps what you're looking for is something more like oscommerce . That is something available out there.
I'll stick with ViArt

Dan, I think you might be trying to confuse licencing with open source. The principal differences between (OSC) and Viart is not the openness, it's the licence type, GNU us Commercial.
Open source, whether GNU or commercial, provides the licencee flexibility, protect their own IP, and offers some business security in thata they can maintain the application in the event the developer does not.
Closed applications make the licencee dependent on the developer for bug fixes and future developments.
