One larger stores, I have a store with 9000+ items and many categories/sub categories, even then I do have some categories with 13 or 36 pages, etc.
Currently browsing is like this
Previous [ 2 of 36 ] Next
If I want to get to page 20 that's a lot of clicking.
The easier modification would be to show all page numbers, that could get ugly at some point though. So here are some other options...
If I'm on page 20 and there is 36 pages....
Previous [16 17 18 19 .... 32 34 35 36 ] Next

Or maybe a select drop box with all pages in it, which I think would be even ugly and less user friendly.

Sorry for triple post but I'd like to correct my example, though Im sure some understand what I meant, also would need a way to get the first or last....
If I'm on page 20...
First, Previous [... 16 17 18 19 .... 21 22 23 24 ... ] Next, Last
Doesn't have to be exact like this but whatever works best.

Darrell, I am strongly in support - it is not just products - there are the long lists of customer, manufacturers, Custom Blocks (I have four pages for my 5 sites and every time I amend one I am sent back to Page 1 and it is click-click-click to get back to page 4).
Fortunately it works on the customer side:
[ 1 of 3 ] 2 3 Next Last
- so we just need this Admin side?

I found out through support how to adjust the pagination. For each area of the site in CMS Settings you have to choose the Products Listing Page block and the blue box comes up with the number options.
For product pages in Admin side I do get the "Previous 1 [ 2 of 3 ] 3 Next" paging, I don't have enough custom blocks or manufactures to experience paging.

Darrell, glad your issue is resolved.
However, there's still an issue with the ones Christopher mentioned (customers, manufacturers). Sales/Orders also lacks any page number options, only "next".

mmmm - I am aware of the products numbering and use it.
My concern is in the admin area, as NTM says.
A lot of staff time is lost scrolling through pages that should be made easy with flexible page numbering.
Chris
Here is a good example
orders maintenance:
I have: [ 1 of 156 ] Next
I scroll through a few and want to go back a couple - lots of click, click, click.
Or more to the point - manufacturers:
[ 1 of 13 ] Next --- and no option for a search; so it is even more click, click!
