Hi Viart

Applying these patches to a new installation will take quite a lot of time. Is it possible to release a new base revision for download from your site that includes all these updates?

Thanks

All the patches from this forum thread are always added to the installation version offered on our website:
http://www.viart.com/downloads/viart_shop-4.0.5.zip

This archive is updated constantly, at least once a week and usually even more often if there are many patches released.

Vera; I have to question if this is the best policy... as I find viart version numbering is very confusing.

If I hadnt asked I would have assumed that if the version on the site to download is still labelled 4.0.5 that I would therefore still have to apply all the patches listed in this area of your forum, which explicitly states it contains patches for 4.0.5.

Your saying that if I download a fresh copy of the zip now, that although its labelled 4.0.5, that i dont need to apply any of these patches. This is really confusing!

Can you not update the file names when you update the downloadable full install files? I understand this may cause issues that then some patches are then only required for certain sub revisions and not others, but it would still seem better than the current process which is very unclear. I also understand it would mean many releases of the system, but is this not better than the confusion and extra support tickets it must generate due to the current confusion that is so easily created?

Also if you constantly updated the main install build and also with that updated the comment details inside each php file it would be very very helpful to me for maintenance reasons when patching various client sites.

I hope you can consider this and maybe improve upon how you release updates to the product.

Also, a final point;

what is the point of using 3 decimal version numbers if the last number isnt at least fairly frequently updated?

In description of this forum thread http://www.viart.com/patches_1.html it is stated:
"You will find in this thread all available patches for our software starting from version 4.0.5. These patches are constantly added to our latest downloadable version as well."

It will be very time consuming, this way we will spend majority of the time describing the problems instead of fixing them, besides we don't find it necessary as there is always available a bug description per every patch.

Version number changes only in case of functional changes. Now we do not add any new features, only fix current bugs plus make improvements of certain algorithms. Giving new version number for fixing every typo in the text is just absurd.

There is a more fundamental issue here; that viart releases editions of its software way before its out of beta. The huge number of vital patches - for nothing as trivial as say a typo as you suggest - illustrate what im talking about.

If like me your making changes to the core code files, which is a selling point of viart in that you can do this its a total nightmare having to patch some of them.

Even if you dont edit the core distributed files, its still very time consuming to apply these updates. Ive been checking the updates forum every 10 days or so since installing v4 for a client and often have to then spend 15/30 mins at a time applying patches as a result each time i go to the forum.
