...I have many 'individual' products which need to appear in a variety of categories... however..
..is it possible to control these products individually so only certain 'instances' of each product will be live on the website while others won't appear on the front end...?
(explanation: I have initially uploaded all my products to a single main category which contains many subcategories.. these are all based on our suppliers.. I need to keep track of products like this as all new products need to be allocated very specific product code based on previous product codes, soI need to see what the previous codes were to keep everything in order.........
So at present everything is listed in a set of sub-categories in a single place, I can now set about putting the products into various other categories that the customer will be searching through (based on DVD subject matter rather than supplier.....)
So once this is all done I'd like to switch off the 'Supplier' category I'm using.. so customers aren't bombarded with unnecessary duplicate results in search results.. but I need to keep these supplier categories for when I'm uploading new products - does any of this make sense??... if I try to switch off a product in the Supplier categories, then all 'instances' of it are switched off too... is there a way around this?)

just a thought...
I've been having great luck with both Navicat ($200 US) and WebYog ($100 US), amazing GUI tools for managing mysql databases. I used up my 30 day trial with Navicat, and am now trying out WebYog, which is fashioned more after the Microsoft Access interface, and has more features. I've mainly used these programs for other glimpses into ViArt and my other databases, but they can certainly be used to alter data, and so far I don't feel like I'm meddling with any of the ViArt functionality.
It sounds like ideally you may need another field for the original code and/or an on/off field? Maybe you could create a separate table and query with one of the above tools. Or pay for ViArt to add it.
