how do these actually work? we activate a coupon and then we have to manually send emails to customers so that they can use it? why isn't there a function for us to automatically send out the email? or am i reading this in a wrong way??

Thanks for your question. Actually, yes. You set the coupon for a customer and then send the coupon code to him manually.
 
However, there is one more possible way to send automatic notifications, namely: to insert a code, like: {gift_vouchers} in various e-mail notifications. Also, it is possible to add this code in the e-mail notification for order statuses or to the notifications on the Final Checkout Page for the payment systems you use.
 
And finally, if the user is registered in your system, then he can easily view the coupons' details on his user home page.

One more possible variant about automatic notifications. When adding a new product, you can select a product type as a gift voucher and set E-mail notification for this certain product by clicking the Notification tab, activating e-mail notification and inserting the {gift_vouchers} code.

ok. the suggestions you put to me are pretty complicated. what i want to achieve is just generating a new coupon, and then send out emails to specific customers to inform them about this coupon. i understand that one coupon only works 1 time even if i had specified like say 5 users to that coupon. however, if i make it such that my coupon can work 5 times, a customer may just use it 5 times and the other people won't have a chance to use!
 
is it possible to add a line and code into the editing coupons area so that my valued customers can enjoy a discount?
