I want to add a new one in due course with a .fr TLD as a dedicated French language site
— not just offering a choice of languages on one site but creating a whole French feel.
Viart multi sites has opened up the possibilities
If you have a multi-site set up, how is it working for you?

Chris, thank you for your information on these pages about multi-site.
I am also thinking about to create a multi-site with 2 domains. I want to sell the same items to consumers and to shops (wholesale). Off course the quantities and prices will be different for those 2 different groups of clients.
As the making of a webshop exactly as you want is all very complicated, I am a bit afraid that wanting a multi-site will even more complicate this.
Also seen the forum activity on these pages, I wonder if lots of people also make use of the multi-site feauture.
So I am hesitating if I must give it a try or not. How are your experiences so far with the multi-site?

Hi Eelrid,
if the multi site feature frightens you you always have the option of showing different prices for different user groups. this may be easier...

I have tried today to setup 2 sites on different domains, and it seem to work very well
I have placed an order from each of the testsites and the same stock has been updated twice. And when you cancel an order, it goes back into the stock. Very nice.
However, in the sales/order list I don't see anything of an id to be able to see from which of the 2 sites the order comes ? Is this correct that you can't see that anywhere ?

In admin_orders.php - SEARCH ORDERS there is a drop down box 'Site:' to select a site to see which orders were from that site.

Thanks, I had overlooked that.
Personally I would like it very much if there could be an site-id number in the list of orders. So you could easy see from which site it comes.

I agree... that would definitely be nice to see on the list! very crucial

"if there could be an site-id number in the list"
Yes my despatch department have complained about this as it is not really easy tracking order source by going sit by site.

Is Multisite an option to use when we want a completely different product range or is it just linked to primary product database.
Am I missing the point - so do we need to set up a completely separate admin site if we diversify?
cheers Colin

Nope, you can put all products in the database and then decide which products get placed onto which site individually

Rodney, you should start a new thread for a totally different topic

Hi Chris,
can you tell me how Viart has set this up for you with all the different domains? Did they use the second method mentioned in the manual?
e.g.: $http_host = $_SERVER["HTTP_HOST"];
if (preg_match("/^(www\.)?example\.com$/i", $http_host)) {
$site_id = 2;
Or have they copied the files form the main domain and done something else?

Sorry, ewoud, this is foreign territory for me — I am a marketing person not a programmer. They know that they created a copy of files for each domain, otherwise I just rely upon Viart to get the results I need.
