Evaluating the free version right now, is it possible to disable the forum please?

You could just disable the menu link.
 
In CMS > Layouts > LAYOUT NAME > Site Navigation
untick MENU_FORUM
 
Also ensure no FORUM blocks are selected in Home page layout.
