I would like to place a little picture with a link on the homepage OUTSIDE a block. So the banners and ads thing wont work. Where would I code this in? What file?

Would using the Greetings section in the "Administration > Global Settings" be of use? This would only appear on the home page under the menu and its a column spanning area.

Greetings
Your question is not very clear, if I understand correctly. You want a custom block to appear on the left column.
From CMS select custom block...create you block, give a unique name...From Layout section select HOME PAGE...from Available Blocks..select the block you just made from unique name you gave.
Look at the title..
I don't want it to have the edges of the block, the fancy border. I just want a button sepperately..

Greeting,
Thanks clarifying, you either have to live with the color border or remove them from css - easy method. Of course doing so will remove border to all blocks.
A bit harder would be to create clean css and specify blocks with border and those without.
Well, thanks for the awnser though. That's the only con about a CMS, the restrictions.

This can easily be done. All you have to do is set a new style for that box, and specify that on the custom block page where you have it placed. If you want further help, please let me know.

Greetings,
Tocdco is absolutely correct, in fact their are so many ways to skin a cat with ViArt. That at time you get accustom explaining 1 way or 2.
