I've been searched for make secure to show exactly the same products (images, name, decsriptions, etc.) in more shops (do not get penatlys for duplicate content). The new "canonical" tag would be the better for this.
The concept would be:
-------------------------------
IF a Product setted to show in more shops -
THEN The first selected shop (in pages) will be the main, have not got canonical tag,
ELSE For the other shops, Viart put the caninical tag into the page code.
-------------------------------
Yes, would be the best to make a function in "pages" to set, and edit the primary shop for the Products.

If You make 2 web pages with same text (or the text is 60-80% same) You have a chance in Google to be pentalized, or banned from the index.
The "canonical" tag is accepted by google to show that the web page is not an original, but a version of an another page, so Google will not ban it.

Well, I am so pleased that Google must like me. I have five linked sites and often three or more are on page one in a search for the same product.
Not complaining, just don't understand the canonical thing and why it makes the difference? .

I was just going to ask for the same feature - but for another purpose.
We have several "landing" pages to keep track of promotional campaigns. These pages are custom pages which look basically like the home page, except for a special deal.
Because of Search Engine penalities, I would like these to have a canonical reference.
I can see this would also go for articles and products. There should be a way to specify the canonical page for each custom page - if there is a canonical, that is.
